New Blood – Heavy Water 1999
Debut album for this seminal Melbourne trio, featuring Ben Carr and Will Guthrie fresh from their tertiary studies, along with a slightly more established Simmons. An acoustic mix of styles from free jazz, new music, thrash metal and minimalism was explored, along with a desire to break away from the normal instrumental roles. Try and imagine this trio playing to a Geelong pub audience going off, busking at Circular Quay or at the Jazz Albury/Wondonga jazz club where they went off the crazier the music got – and imagine that happening in 1999.
